Over 150 years ago, in 1862, the story of Mammut began when Kaspar Tanner founded a small rope-making business in Switzerland. The ropes were primarily made for agricultural use. In the 1950s, a sports assortment of synthetic ropes for alpine and sailing sports was established. The name "Mammut" has since been used for ropes. In the 1970s, Mammut expanded its range to include sleeping bags, tents, and clothing, and in 1981, the first clothing collection under the name "Mammut" hit the market.

Today, the company is globally recognized for sport climbing, alpine, outdoor, and snow sports products, distinguished by its black Mammut logo. Although the headquarters remains in Switzerland, Mammut now has locations worldwide. A notable development is the clothing department, which now constitutes a significant portion of the revenue. The range extends from functional hiking and trekking clothing to products for climbing, bouldering, and ski touring. Additionally, Mammut offers highly advanced clothing for use in extreme high-alpine terrain, making the brand a preferred choice for mountaineers on the world's highest peaks.
